DAY 33 - JULIÉNAS TO CHÂTILLON-SUR-CHALARONNE

A fairly quiet day after all the highlights of yesterday. It started with a stroll through the vineyards of Beaujolais.

Morning walk in the Beaujolais
We walked alongside the Saône, then took the bridge across to the other side.

Approaching the bridge over which we crossed the Saône
We stopped in Thoissey for our morning coffee, then continued on quiet roads to St-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne. There we sat on a bench in the village square and had our lunch.

Taking time to smell the roses - between Thoissey and St-Étienne-sur-Chalaronne
As we approached Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne, the weather looked like it was closing in. This time it took pity on us, and the rain held off until after we arrived.

The heavens threatened to open, but they didn't.
We walked through the old town on the way to our hotel. It is full of interesting old buildings, including one where St Vincent de Paul lived when he was a priest here a few centuries ago.

Part of the old town of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne - full of character

  1. Hi Kath and Russel !
That's Pierre and Denis (cyclists between Montargis and Rogny-les-sept-ecluses). I only discover your blog now, but I will sure spend a lot of time to read all the trip. The photos in Rogny with the blue sky look marvellous compared to the other ones with the grey weather. Hope it will be better soon. Guess what : in Cluny, you stayed in the same B&B where we stayed last October (but not the same bedroom). I am happy you could experiment such a stunning house.
About us, our trip to La Charité was fine, but didn't like so much the atmosphere of the Loire veloroute compared to the charm of the canal.
Good luck for the next days of walking !

  2. Great to hear from you Pierre and Denis! The weather was fine today at last but we would have loved your company for the last 5km again, which always seems to drag. Keep in touch!
