DAY 1 - DIEPPE TO ST-AUBIN-SUR-SCIE

The long wait is over. We are underway. Today was a short stage, much like the opening prologue of a cycling  Grand Tour. Long enough to get the muscles moving and to whet the appetite for the days to come.

After arriving by ferry in Dieppe, we made our way to the beachfront for a ceremonial selfie to mark the start of our walk.

Ceremonial start of the walk - The English Channel at Dieppe
The sun was shining, and there were lots of people promenading by the seaside and through the town. We headed south, away from the coast, to pick up the GR210,  the long-distance walking path which connects Dieppe to Rouen.  Despite erratic signage, we found the path and followed it out of Dieppe and into the countryside.

We passed a burnt-out car which had been dumped on the track, and soon came to a Canadian WWII cemetery, commemorating the Canadian involvement in the raid on Dieppe in 1942.

A few kilometres further on we came to our accommodation and settled in for the night. Our host told us, with a smile on his face, that the nearest eating establishment was a 45 minute walk away. We had expected as much, so had brought food with us from England to see us through tonight.
