Our delightful older daughter left us today to return to Paris. She was to have taken the night train from Briançon tonight, but it was cancelled due to a strike. She left by bus from Les Guibertes this morning instead.

Farewell selfie with our delightful older daughter at Les Guibertes |
After her bus left, we walked a short distance down the main road to join up with the GR50, which we intended to follow for most of the way into Briançon. We soon found ourselves going uphill.

In fact, we went uphill for quite some time.

Eventually, we reached the high point of the day's walk, where the path flattened out to cross a creek. Unfortunately, the recent rains had swollen the creek to such an extent that we considered it unsafe to cross.

Shallow but dangerous - fast-flowing water across the GR50 |
Looking down the raging torrent, we saw part of a bridge that had been washed away.

We located part of the bridge downstream, but decided not to use it to cross over |
We turned around and retraced our steps.

We then navigated our way through a succession of paths to Briançon.

After a relatively short day's walk, almost all on quiet paths which we shared with the occasional cyclist or dog-walker, we arrived in Briançon and checked in to our hotel.

Tonight's dinner - trout with creamy stinging nettle sauce. Apparently the trout was delicious (the remainder of our group had meat instead). |
